SCHOOL BOARD WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED:

The school board renewed a lease agreement with the Coast Community

College District for Coastline Community College to use the Mesa Verde

school site through June 30, 2003. Before the vote was taken, two adult

education teachers implored the board not to continue renting out schools

when the adult education program is paying to rent rooms at a church.

Supt. Robert Barbot told the teachers that he has trying to solve their

problem and is currently negotiating a new location for them.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Coastline will continue to use the Mesa Verde campus. The adult education

program will continue to look for a new location.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“I guess we’ll just be patient a little longer, right ladies?” asked

school board member Wendy Leece, who has been a proponent of the adult

education program.

VOTE: 6-0 in favor

WHAT HAPPENED:

Students were recognized by the school board for their participation in

this year’s academic pentathlon.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Students who were members of the pentathlon teams were awarded a

certificate of recognition from the Board of Education.

WHAT HAPPENED:

Members of the Student Political Action Committee from Newport Harbor

High School presented information gathered at their town hall meeting

regarding the district’s zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol.

After a short video of the town hall meeting, the students answered

questions from the school board.

WHAT IT MEANS:The board now has more input as they consider

possible changes to the policy. They asked the committee to type up their

presentation for the board to use when they look over the policy.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“We certainly don’t want to do anything to diminish the effectiveness of

the policy,” said Supt. Robert Barbot of any possible changes the

district may consider.

WHAT HAPPENED

The school board agreed to allow the third phase of projects at Corona

del Mar High School, using the $190,288 left over from Phases I and II.

Principal Don Martin explained the list of projects and the order in

which the improvements would be completed.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Improvements to the Corona del Mar campus will resume until the $190,288

is spent.
