NEWPORT BEACH -- Tom Brokaw, anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” will discuss

the problems and the challenges we face in the 21st century tonight at

the Newport Beach Central Library.

“[Brokaw] is as qualified an observer of the world scene as there is

today,” said Jim Wood, president of the Library Board of Trustees.

Brokaw -- the sole anchor of “NBC Nightly News” since 1983 -- conducted

the first exclusive U.S. one-on-one interview with Mikhail Gorbachev. He

was also the only anchorman to report from the scene the night the Berlin

Wall fell.

The golden-voiced Brokaw is one of several celebrity lecturers featured

in the library’s Distinguished Speakers Lecture Series.

The event is sold out.
