Sailors roll to title

NEWPORT BEACH - The only thing missing was the suspense. Newport

Harbor High’s Sailors knew they were home free on Wednesday when they

handled Irvine, and Thursday was just frosting on the cake as Jim

Warren’s Sailors dealt Aliso Niguel a 200-211 Sea View League boys golf

defeat en route to completing league with a championship record of 7-1

(16-2 overall) behind a customary blanket finish.

The Sailors, who can boast of seven different medalists over the course

of the season, were paced by the 39s of sophomore Daniel Kush and senior

Jake Allanach, but it was the depth factor which was really the decider.

Seniors Kevin Olson and Scott Tippett carded 41s and junior Miller Akins

had a 41. Even the alternates were right there -- seniors Pete Watson

(40), Traighe Concannon (42) and Mitch Johns (43).

Kush was the trigger, however, with an eagle on the 495-yard No. 2, and a

birdie on the 542-yard No. 5.

“The kids knew when they beat Irvine it was over, and they just went out

and played some basic golf today,” said sixth-year coach Jim Warren,

rewarded by this group with his first boys crown at Harbor.
