CdM, Newport in volleyball semifinals

The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team survived a first-game

scare to defeat Huntington Beach, 13-15, 15-11, 15-6, 15-9, in the

quarterfinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Friday at

Santa Barbara High.

Newport Harbor has also advanced to the semifinals following Friday

night’s 11-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-12 quarterfinal win over Royal from Simi

Valley,

Greg Stampley had 26 kills and senior setter Kevin Hansen amassed 44

assists, six kills and two aces to help the Sea Kings advance to today’s

11 a.m. semifinal against Santa Margarita.

Charlie Alshuler (eight kills), Forrest Mack (six kills and four blocks),

Brian Gallagher (six kills), Chris Shepardson (five kills) and Alec

Hanson (five kills and two aces) also chipped in for CdM.

Should CdM win its semifinal, the title match is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In Newport’s tournament opener, the Sailors had a 15-8, 15-3, 15-13 sweep

over Clovis West of Fresno. Billy Clayton led the Sailors with 16 kills.

Blake Tippett and Dustin Illingworth contributed 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

In Corona del Mar’s tournament opener, a 15-12, 15-12, 15-5 conquest of Bear River from Grass Valley, the Sea Kings were paced by the play of

Stampley (18 kills) and Mack (14 kills), as well as Hansen’s 50 assists.

In the quarterfinal win, Clayton led the Sailors with 24 kills and five

ace serves. Illingworth had 12 kills, while Gaeta and Tippett each

chipped in with 10.

Senior Kent Turner had 53 assists for the Sailors, who will meet the

winner of the San Clemente-Loyola match in the semifinals today at 11

a.m.
