Tennis: Abrams advances to semifinals

OJAI - Two local doubles teams are just one victory away from a

title while Stanford senior Geoff Abrams is two wins from the men’s

Pac-10 singles championship at the 100th annual Ojai Valley Tennis

Tournament.

Abrams, the No. 2 seed and a graduate of Newport Harbor, swept Jan-Noel

Grinda of UCLA, 7-5, 6-3 during Friday’s quarterfinals. He will face

college teammate K.J. Hippensteel in today’s semifinals at 11 a.m.

Caylan Leslie of Newport Beach and Ashley Backus of San Diego had little

trouble against Leigh Ann Merryman and Carolyn Mitchell in a 6-2, 6-0,

victory in the girls 18s doubles semifinals. Leslie and Backus, the top

seed in their division, take on Nicole LaBrucherie and Jamie Pagliano of

Peninsula High in today’s final at 8 a.m.

Peter Kulmaticki and Michael Bean, both students at Corona del Mar,

advanced to today’s boys 16s doubles finals with an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory

over Eric Ho and Johnny Nguyen, both from Alhambra. Kulmaticki and Bean

will face John Paul Beck and Ashwin Bargava of Santa Barbara today, at 8

a.m.

In boys 16s singles, Corona del Mar’s Cameron Ball dropped a 6-3, 3-6,

0-6 decision to Burbank’s Garin Wuidertimeir.

For Orange Coast College’s women’s tennis team, Lot Keijzer advanced to

today’s community college singles quarterfinals against Melissa Onstine

of Mt. San Jacinto. In the third round, Keijzer defeated Cara Phillips of

Cabrillo, 6-2, 6-1. In the fourth round, she got past Katharina Menzel of

San Diego City, 6-2, 6-2.

Keijzer teamed with Erica Goode in the doubles tournament to win their

third round match against Jennette Manzo and Ruby Pulido of Cerritos,

6-2, 6-2. But they fell in the fourth round to Georgie Dinham and Maria

Pergamalis of Marymount, 6-3, 6-0.

In the third round, Sondra McNamara and Jessica Andrus of OCC fell to

Nicole Lundgren and Silke Martin of College of the Desert.

Mason Wei of Orange Coast College’s men’s tennis team fell in the third

round to Tony Mercado of Chabot, 6-4, 7-5. In the community college

doubles tournament, Wei and Truong Hoang
