Newport Harbor High’s Cara Heads and Mandy Clayton both qualify for the

CIF State Girls Division II track and field finals. Heads throws a 133-1

in her third attempt in the discus, placing third at the Master’s Meet.

Clayton makes a 36-10 in her final attempt in the triple jump at the

Master’s Meet.

In the CIF Southern Section Division II track and field finals, Heads

finish second in girls discus with a throw of 124-8. Clayton jumps a

36-10 3/4 in the triple jump.

Newport’s Laura Wilson finishes third in the girls shot put (37-10) to

qualify for the Master’s Meet. And the Sailors’ Tina Bowman wins the

girls high jump with a 5-6.

Corona del Mar’s Tracy Clark closes out her prep career with a

fifth-place finish at the CIF Division II finals in the 3,200-meter run.

For the boys track and field championships, Estancia’s Johann Appell is

fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division III 3,200 race. Newport’s

Shahram DeZahd places eighth in the Division II 1,600.

CdM’s boys tennis team is eliminated in the CIF Division I quarterfinals

by powerful Beverly Hills. John Cappello and the doubles team of James

Stauffer and John Macfarlane win the only two Sea King sets.

Ten years ago

CdM’s Jill Young wins the girls 330 hurdles in the CIF Southern Section

Division 3-A track and field finals. Estancia Debbie Hargrove becomes the

first track and field athlete in school history to win a CIF

championship, taking the discus throw.

Edison knocks out CdM’s boys volleyball team in the Division 4-A

quarterfinals, 9-15, 15-9, 16-14, 15-8. Doug Hesse leads the Sea Kings

with 18 kills.

Mira Costa eliminates Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team in the

Division 4-A second round, 15-11, 16-14, 15-5. Alex Opoulos has 11 kills

for the Sailors.

Woodbridge’s baseball team takes out Estancia in a Division 3-A wild card

game, 3-2. Paul McDaniel and Cody Rodman drive in the two Estancia runs.

CdM’s boys tennis team hammers Santa Ana Valley, 17-1, in the first round

of the Division 4-A playoffs. David Brin and James Katzman sweep in

singles for the Sea Kings. In the second round, CdM gets past Ventura,

11-7.

Newport Harbor’s boys tennis team breeze to a 15-3 romp over Long Beach

Wilson in the Division 4-A first round. Brett Hansen-Dent, Billy Hanson

and Brad Gibson all sweep in singles for the Sailors. In the second

round, the Tars easily beats Westlake, 15-3.
