Men’s tennis: Vanguard stunned by Azusa Pacific

SAN DIEGO - In a battle of two of the NAIA’s top-six teams, the

Vanguard University men’s tennis team was mildly upset in the NAIA Region

II finals against Azusa Pacific, 5-3, Thursday at Point Loma Nazarene.

Winners for the Lions, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, were Olli Helminen and

Joakim Ulfvebrand in singles and the doubles team of Ulfvebrand and

Martin Makovec.

Singles - Johansson (VU) lost to Mathen, 1-6, 1-6; Helminen (VU) def.

Asusa, 6-1, 6-4; Ulfvebrand (VU) def. Rudl, 6-1, 6-1; Stromberg (VU) lost

to Medina, 6-7, 2-6; Makovec (VU) lost to Molinda, 3-6, 3-6.

Doubles - Helminen-Johansson (VU) lost to Mathen-Hahn, 4-8;

Skrzeczynski-Stromberg (VU) lost to Medina-Molinda, 4-8;

Ulfvebrand-Makovec (VU) def. Rudl-Asusa, 8-5.
