The third annual Child Safety Awareness Day will be held May 20 at Norm

Reeves Honda Superstore. Experts will be on hand to discuss child safety

at play, at home and in the car. There will also be a demonstration on

how to install a child’s car seat properly. Free child identification

kits will be handed out. The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is sponsored

by the dealership, the Huntington Beach Lifeguards Assn. and child safety

advocates. Norm Reeves Honda is at 19131 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach.

Golden West hands out scholarships

Nearly $250,000 was given to current and incoming Golden West College

students at the college’s annual Scholarship and Awards Convocation on

Tuesday night.

The Huntington Beach-based community college gave away $232,041, more

than $52,000 more than it did last year. The scholarships are granted to

returning students, new students and to current Golden West students who

are continuing their educations at universities.The Associated Students

of Golden West College provided 32 $1,000 scholarships. Two chemistry

students shared an $18,000 scholarship, which was provided by an

anonymous donor. The Frank M. Doyle Foundation provided a total of

$31,581 to Huntington Beach high school seniors who will attend Golden

West in the fall.Rozanne Capoccia of Huntington Beach was honored with

the college’s most prestigious scholarship, the R. Dudley Boyce

Outstanding Student award, named after Golden West College’s founding

president.

Seniors win $1,000 scholarships

Seniors Asha Goud and Ngoc Hong each received a $1,000 scholarship and a

Hitachi videocassette recorder as runners-up in the Orange County Hitachi

Safety Scholarship competition.

Goud, who attends Edison, and Hong, who attends Los Amigos High, were two

of five finalists in the competition. To enter, both wrote essays on

community safety, their personal commitment to it and community

solutions.

“It was really stiff competition,” said Harold Hadnott, a Hitachi

representative.

At the finals, held late last month, each person presented his or her

safety ideas to a mock city council. The first place award was a $5,000

scholarship.
