OCC students to show work

A team of OCC marketing students that won “The Lab Anti-Mall Artful

Business Scholarship” will introduce their winning proposal from 11 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Saturday at the mall.

Kathy Spahr, Schot Anthony Walsh and Kara Noone won first place in the

competition, in which OCC marketing students competed for a $1,050 cash

award. The team’s proposal, “Artists Unleased,” was their concept for a

free show of student works that reflects the artistic vision of The Lab.

The Saturday event will include an art contest with featured works from

art majors at OCC. The artists will be stationed throughout the mall, and

attendees will be able to watch the creative process in action.

The student works will be placed in two categories: painting, drawing and

collage, and sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. Afterward, a group of

judges will decide the winning entries, followed by a sale of the

completed pieces.

OCC plans auditions for summer plays

OCC will hold auditions for a pair of summer plays as part of its

“One-on-One Festival” at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Drama Lab

Studio.

The festival, which runs July 26-30 and Aug. 2-6 in the Drama Lab Studio,

will feature two plays: “Talking With,” and Eric Bogosian’s “Drinking in

America.” Both feature monologues and mono-dramas.

Both plays are directed by OCC theater professor Alex Golson, who will be

assisted by two student directors, Pamela Russell (“Talking With”) and

Sean Gray (“Drinking in America”).

“Talking With” is about 10 women who commiserate with one another.

“Drinking in America” is about 12 men who are problem drinkers and want

to “feel special.”

“Talking With” has roles for 10 women. “Drinking in America” has parts

for 12 to 14 men. Both plays contain adult material.

All roles are open, and rehearsals begin in mid-June.

Balboa Art Walk set for May 21

South Bayfront promenade -- will be held at 9 a.m. May 21. The event,

featuring art and music, will be held between Marine Avenue and the Ferry

Landing at Opal.

This year’s Art Walk will include a wide selection of watercolors, oils,

pastels, pottery and fine-glass works. Some of the artists include Diane

Moon, Debra Huse, Richard Kent, Michael Situ and Steve Simon. Juan

Casado’s work will be featured on the Art Walk’s T-shirts and posters.

Music will be provided by locals Rick Sherman, Mark Wood, The Fins and

the Fabulous Nomads.

The artists are donating a portion of their entry fee to the Balboa

Theater Restoration Project and the Balboa Island Museum and Historical

Society, whose representatives also will be on hand to share their plans

for a new museum. Admission to the event is free.
