INSIDE SCOOP

The sculpture of whale bones the Huntington Beach City Council approved

earlier this month is supposed to make the corner of Pacific Coast

Highway and Beach Boulevard more beautiful.

The fossil-like bones have pointed ends sticking out of the ground and

are grouped in a loose circle.

Rather than being pretty art, the sculpture reminds resident Don Slaven

of a freakish character in a horror movie series, “Nightmare on Elm

Street.”

“It looks like some kind of Freddy Krueger hand coming out of the sand,”

he said.

Bunch of jokesters

The Fountain Valley City Council always has a few jokes on hand -- and so

do the residents.

Attendants at the last Fountain Valley Mayor’s Breakfast participated in

the usual introductions around the room with a joke thrown in here and

there. After everyone stated their name, guest speaker Anne Schaffer,

from the Freedom Foundation, took the lectern.

“I don’t think I could compete with the comedians in this group,” she

said.
