This salty schooner was built by the Wilmington Boat Works for Jim

Dickson in 1920. She remained in the Dickson family through two

generations. As of 1999 she is still afloat and sailing out of Oahu in

the Hawaiian Islands. Jubilo was homeported at Newport Harbor from 1940

to 1970.

The Dickson family were active members of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club

where Jubilo was moored off the Club House dock.

Jubilo, while basically a cruising yacht, was quite active in racing

circles. Jim Dickson and his young bride, on their honeymoon, raced

Jubilo to Honolulu in the 1926 Trans Pacific Yacht Race. This was the

year that John Barrymore, the famous actor, participated with his

107-foot schooner Mariner. In the early 1970s, Jim Dickson Jr. sailed

Jubilo from Newport Harbor to Maui, where she remained until sold in

1987. This ended a 67-year love affair with the schooner yacht Jubilo by

the Dickson family.
