At the Huntington Beach Mayor’s Breakfast last week, Dr. Michael

Schumacher mentioned he was the fifth director in two years of the Orange

County Health Care Agency.

“I advertise myself as the director that plans to stay,” he said.

But the county’s maintenance department would rather keep him on a short

leash.

Instead of a nameplate on his door, they posted a blackboard and wrote

his name in chalk, he said.

That didn’t bother him, though.

“It was the long string attached with an eraser at the bottom that really

caught my attention,” he said.

TURNING IT DOWN

At that same breakfast, Schumacher, a Huntington Beach resident, thanked

Mayor Dave Garofalo for helping with a noise problem near his home. It

was no problem, said Garofalo. “We just turned the volume down on his TV

when he was watching Channel 3,” the mayor joked.

FLASHING THE BADGE

Fountain Valley Mayor Guy Carrozzo rarely has to show his mayor’s badge

to prove his status with the city.

“I’ve only had to pull it out twice,” he said.

The first time was during his previous stint as mayor in 1995. He had to

show the badge to police officers to obtain access into a blocked off

accident site near his home. Carrozzo wanted to talk to officers to make

sure everything was all right.

The second and most recent time was at Northcutt Elementary School.

Before sitting down to read to a third-grade class, the students wanted

to make sure they were talking to the real mayor. So, they asked him to

show them his badge for proof.
