Volleyball: Newport Harbor, CdM stars sine bright

HUNTINGTON BEACH - With both the boys and girls CIF Southern

Section Division I champions coming from the Newport Beach area, it’s

only natural for Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor High to send a sizable

contingent to the Dave Mohs Orange County High School Volleyball All-Star

matches tonight at Edison High, the 24th annual All-Star match.

Division I boys champion Corona del Mar will send Stanford-bound setter

Kevin Hansen and outside hitter Greg Stampley, a walk-on candidate at

USC, to the boys South team. CdM Coach Steve Conti will join El Toro’s

Michelle Kyman and Irvine’s Mark Mednick on the South coaching staff.

Newport Harbor’s Billy Clayton and Kent Turner will get another chance to

beat the Sea Kings after losing to them in the Division I championship

game. Clayton, a Stanford-bound opposite hitter, and Turner, a setter

headed to USC next year, are on the boys North team that will be coached

by Tom Costanzo of Mater Dei and Darrick Lucero of Marina.

Newport Harbor’s April Ross, the USC-bound Gatorade National Player of

the Year who led the Sailors to a Division I section and state title, is

one of three Sailors on the girls North team. Duke-bound middle blocker

Krista Dill and UC Irvine-bound outside hitter Brenda Waterman are the

other Sailors on the North squad, coached by Cypress’ Heather Dillard and

Calvary Chapel’s Jim Downey.

For Dill, it could be a pretty busy day for her. She is at the State

Preliminaries at Cerritos College with the discus, which begins at 3 p.m.

CdM outside hitters Dimitra Havriluk and Jamie Brownell were named to the

South team that will be coached by St. Margaret’s Susie Maga and Santa

Margarita’s Eddie Rapp. Havriluk, who led the Sea Kings in kills,

committed to West Virginia. Brownell is headed to Stanford. The Sea Kings

reached the semifinals of the Division III state playoffs in December.

The girls match starts at 6 p.m. and the boys match has a 7 p.m. start

time. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and children.
