CMPD BLUES

Costa Mesa Police Chief Dave Snowden has a special place in his heart for

Gordon “Tex” Beneke, the famous Big Band jazz saxophonist and vocalist

who died in Costa Mesa last week. Not only had Snowden met Beneke and

heard him play on several occasions, his father, Lew Snowden, led

Beneke’s band in a 1940s movie.

MEASURE WHAT?

A Fullerton resident, who used to live in Corona del Mar, was utterly

confused last week when she received a glossy endorsement for Measure A

in the mail. Jill Money, co-chair of Citizens to Rebuild our Schools,

assured us that sending a flier outside of the Newport-Mesa area was an

oversight and not the practice of the group. But the Fullerton resident

is still wondering if she is invited to join Newport-Mesa voters at the

polls Tuesday.

THAT’S DEDICATION

A father and son challenged each other to attend Western State University

College of Law. The father, Ben Roll, dropped out when he was called away

as a missionary. But his son, Thomas Roll, got the degree.

Ben Roll finally returned to law school and passed the bar exam at age

75.

He was sworn in as a member of the bar by his son, who by that time had

already become a judge.
