Corona del Mar High senior Kevin Hansen, who led the Sea Kings to

their second CIF Southern Section championship in three seasons, has been

chosen CIF Division I Most Valuable Player by section coaches.

Hansen, a first-team All-CIF Division I choice last year, when the Sea

Kings lost in the Division I title match to Newport Harbor, avenged that

defeat by keying a five-game triumph over the Sailors in the Division I

final, May 27 at Cypress College.

Hansen, a 6-foot-4 setter bound for Stanford, was also All-CIF twice in

basketball and was named the Sea View League Male Athlete of the Year.

In addition to Hansen, CdM senior Greg Stampley and Newport Harbor senior

Billy Clayton were named to the first team.

Newport Harbor senior setter Kent Turner was a second-team selection and

CdM senior Alec Hansen was recognized on the third team.

Stampley, a 6-4 outside hitter, was the Sea Kings most productive

attacker and CdM Coach Steve Conti called him the most complete outside

hitter in Orange County.

Stampley, who will walk on at USC next season, shared PCL MVP honors with

Hansen, leading the Sea Kings to an unbeaten record in their PCL debut.

CdM was 22-1 overall.

Clayton, a 6-5 outside hitter who will play at Stanford next season, was

the primary recipient of Turner’s sets. Clayton and Turner, who will

likely not play at his collegiate home, USC, helped Coach Dan Glenn’s

Sailors share the Sea View League title. The Tars then put together a

string of upsets in the playoffs, topping San Clemente, Marina and Mira

Costa, among others, to reach the title match and finish 17-6.

Turner had 88 assists against Marina and 71 against San Clemente.

Hanson, a 6-0 outside hitter who plans to play for the club team at Cal

next year, worked through injuries to help the Sea Kings prevail.

Hanson, a second-team All-CIF point guard as a senior basketball

standout, missed close to a month with a badly sprained ankle early in

the season. He also played through a pulled abdominal muscle in the

playoffs.

All five All-CIF honorees played in the Orange County All-Star Match,

where Hansen collected MVP honors.
