Why is it that when a liberal/leftist organization, which does not even

come close to the views of my constituents, gives me a low rating, it is

on the front page of your newspaper (“Report: Cox, Rohrabacher have poor

voting habits,” June 7)?

I hope your paper will also print a report on the front page when

organizations such as the National Federation of Independent Business,

the United States Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Tax Reform, the

National Taxpayers’ Union, the National Tax Limitation Committee,

Watchdogs of the Treasury, Citizens for a Sound Economy, the 60-Plus

Assn., the United Seniors Assn., the American Conservative Union or

Citizens Against Government Waste--which are much closer to the views of

my constituents--give me awards or high ratings.

Neighbor clarifies her quote on Samoa house

Well, we may finally be reaching the end of the story on the Samoa house

saga. It will be a big relief for this neighborhood to finally start

putting this behind us.

I feel take a strong exception to the way my quote was framed in the

Daily Pilot (“City settles lawsuit over Samoa house,” June 8). It’s only

a couple of words, but what a difference that can make in meaning. I

said:”This is a long lesson for the neighborhood, in the future, others

may look twice before building something incompatible.”

I think that is the crux of the matter and very important to me that your

paper represents it accurately. My comment was not at all directed toward

the owners of the house as could perhaps be inferred from the article.

The important point to make here is that now, when anyone starts to

remodel, they will learn from this sad situation and consider whether

what they want to build is “compatible, harmonious and in scale with the

neighborhood” as section 13 of the Costa Mesa Zoning Code says it must

be.

The city should also be much more strongly motivated to apply this

criteria properly to future remodeling projects.

What our neighborhood went through was horrible. My big hope is that in

the future other neighborhoods will be spared this unpleasant experience.
