Marlins top two victims

COSTA MESA - Strong pitching was the name of the game for the

Marlins in their 2-1 win over the Cardinals June 6 and their 4-0 win over

the Dodgers June 8 in Costa Mesa National Little League Major Division

action.

In their win over the Cards, Vinnie Valdez pitched four strong innings

with seven strikeouts. P.J. Errington and Ryan Bagwell relieved Valdez to

keep the Cardinals at bay.

Offensively, Mike Wolf had two hits and one RBI, while Bagwell added a

key double.

In the win over the Dodgers, pitcher Victor Valdez struck out nine and

allowed only one hit over five innings of work. Healso had two hits

including a solo home run.

Bagwell pitched the sixth inning and got the save. At the plate, he had a

clutch RBI single.

The Marlins’ defense was led by Taylor Higgins and Andrew Whitaker.

Tigers outlast Dodgers

COSTA MESA - The Tigers closed out the regular season with their

18th straight win, a 15-10 win over the Dodgers in Costa Mesa American

Little League Major Division action recently.

R.J. Duernberger had three hits, including a third-inning home run for

the Tigers, while Jamie Tinnion, Andrew Sanford, Nick Peterson and Andrew

Millian each added two hits.

Corey Hughes led the Tigers’ defense with several stellar plays.

Locals in Gravity Games

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Costa Mesa residents Rune Glifberg and Lincoln

Ueda qualified for this summer’s Gravity Games. The contest of

alternative sports was created by NBC Sports and o7 emap.usaf7 two

years ago, and it is scheduled July 15-23 in Providence, R.I.

Glifberg, a seven-year pro, qualified as the top competitor in the

skateboarding events by winning the 2000 B3 event at Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Ueda was among the top three competitors in the World Cup Skateboarding’s

1999 overall ranking and is a favorite in the vert skating events.

Baseball camp scheduled

NEWPORT BEACH - A baseball camp for players ages 10-14, put on by the Newport Harbor Baseball Association and the Newport Harbor High

baseball program, will be held June 26-30 at Newport Harbor High.

Registration is $115 for the five-day camp, which will include

instruction from the Newport Harbor staff on all elements of the game.

Cramer speedway winner

COSTA MESA - Krystal Cramer a 9-year-old Newport Beach resident,

won the three-lap junior heat at Saturday’s Speedway Motorcycle Racing at

the Orange County Fairgrounds.

In the handicap main event, Costa Mesa’s Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz

finished sixth. Chris Manchester of Upland won the event.

Andy Northrup of Alta Loma won the scratch main event.
