A Newport Beach couple awarded $33,000 in scholarships to students who

will attend UC Irvine in the fall.

Stanley and Jessica Behren formed the Stanley Behren Foundation 11 years

ago. Any Orange County student planning to attend UC Irvine is eligible

to apply for the scholarships, Stanley Behren said.

This year, the Behrens awarded nine scholarships -- eight for $4,000 and

one for $1,000, to highly motivated students from throughout Orange

County. Recipients were either high school seniors or students at local

junior colleges.

Stanley Behren said the foundation awards scholarships only to students

going to UC Irvine because he feels the money can make a greater impact

at one university.

In order to keep the scholarships, which are renewable each year,

students must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and give 90 hours

annually to the charity of their choice.
