CORONA DEL MAR - Ty Harper, a former Corona del Mar High baseball

standout who earned all-state recognition as a freshman at Golden West

College this spring, signed a letter of intent to continue his academic

and athletic career at Alabama, his mother Merrilee announced Friday.

Harper singed with the Crimson Tide at the airport Friday, before

returning from a recruiting visit to Tuscaloosa. The first baseman picked

the Southeastern Conference school over UCLA and Cal State Fullerton.

He hit .455 with 63 RBIs in his only season at Golden West, leading the

Orange Empire Conference in hits (81) and doubles (19).

At CdM, he led the Sea Kings to the 1999 CIF Southern Section Division IV

title as a senior, earning CIF and Newport-Mesa District Co-Player of the

Year laurels.

In three varsity seasons, he set CdM and district career records for hits

(132), home runs (24) and RBIs (99), while compiling a .514 career

batting average.
