NEWPORT-MESA SCHOOL BOARD PREVIEW

DISTRICT BUDGET

The school board is required to hold a public hearing detailing the

district’s plan for the 2000-01 budget. During the hearing, any resident

may voice their opinion about the budget.

What to expect:

During the regular meeting following the hearing, the board will consider

adopting the budget.

ROOM FOR STUDENTS

Each year, the district must look at the projected enrollment at each

school and make sure there are enough classrooms to house all students.

What to expect: The board will consider adopting district officials’

recommendation to move portable classrooms around and lease 14 additional

portable buildings from Saddleback Unified School District in order to

house all of Newport-Mesa’s students next fall.

RAISES FOR SCHOOL EMPLOYEES

The district and the California School Employees Assn., which serves

nonteacher employees, have been in salary negotiations since October. A

tentative agreement was reached June 15.

What to expect: The school board will consider approving $1,105,803 for

employee raises.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS

An election for Newport-Mesa’s governing board positions are scheduled to

be held this fall.

What to expect: The board is expected to pass a resolution to set the

election for Nov. 7 to fill the seats of three trustees -- Dana Black,

Dave Brooks and Martha Fluor -- whose terms expire Dec. 1.
