The former teachers and students of Fountain Valley Elementary School

didn’t have much luck with the time capsule they left behind when the

school closed 10 years ago. The capsule was found to be waterlogged when

it was opened.

However, compared to the recent experience of a Westminster school that

could not find the time capsule it buried 30 years ago, the Fountain

Valley did pretty well.

“At least we knew where it was,” said Fountain Valley Councilman Larry

Crandall, who organized the opening.

On lookout for some

police protection

At a Huntington Beach City Council meeting last week, Sgt. Bob Teramura

of the Los Angeles Police Department, a longtime resident of Huntington

Beach, received an award of commendation from the city for donating the

use of his martial arts center to the Huntington Beach Police Department.

In light of the public response to controversy Mayor Dave Garofalo has

faced lately at council meetings, he had a request for the officer.

“Bob, stick around later in case I need you,” Garofalo said jokingly.

Ice cream follies

At a Fountain Valley Council meeting recently, Fire Battalion Chief Paul

Summers presented two six-packs of Klondike ice cream bars to Mayor Guy

Carrozzo as part of a 30-year tradition upheld by the Fountain Valley

Fire Department.

The tradition says that whenever somebody in a fire truck does something

for the first time, they owe a debt of ice cream to the fire station.

While leading a motorcade of fire trucks back from an event, Summers left

his emergency lights on at a red light. Summers was promptly made aware

of his blunder by Mayor “Smokey the Bandit” Carrozzo via radio

communication.

As the mayor caught him in a first, Summers felt it was appropriate to

include Carrozzo in the department’s sweet tradition.

However, turnabout is fair play.

“It was the mayor’s first time on our radios, so we’ve got some Klondikes

on the way as well,” Summers said.
