Firefighters from the Newport Beach Balboa Peninsula station will begin

Fourth of July celebrations at American Legion Post 291 by flipping

pancakes from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The pancake breakfast, which costs $6 per

person, is open to the public and includes a harbor tour aboard Tiki. The

Legion hall, at 215 15th St. in Newport Beach, will also be visited by a

fire boat from the Orange County Harbor Patrol. Some 80,000 people are

expected to view the the 41st annual Old Glory Boat Parade, which starts

prior to 1 p.m. and will include more than 150 boats and a helicopter

flyover from the Air National Guard at Los Alamitos, said Jerry Murphy,

EXCHANGE CLUB DISTRICT CONVENTION: The Exchange Club of Newport

Harbor is the host club for the Cal-Nevada District Conference being held

at the Newport Beach Marriott this weekend. Exchange Club members from

all over California and Nevada are discussing how to identify community

needs and learning about award-winning programs. Conventioneers enjoyed

Friday night’s Search for Talent competition, and will vote today for a

future district president. Local member and past club president Dick

Freeman is a candidate.

SISTER CITY BASTILLE DAY: The Antibes Committee of the Newport

Beach Sister City Assn. invites everyone to an evening of fine food and

o7 joie de vivref7 at The Sutton Place Hotel’s poolside patio from 7

to 10 p.m. Friday. This is a fund-raiser to help continue Sister City

activities. The cost of $50 per person includes a delightful menu. To

ROTARY OFFICERS INSTALLED: Corona del Mar resident Wendell Sawyer

was installed as president of the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club on Wednesday

night at the demotion party for outgoing president Jim Sirkin. Sirkin was

roasted and toasted by the 56-member club. He also received proclamations

from the city of Newport Beach and the county of Orange. Under Sirkin’s

leadership, the club won top honors in Rotary District 5320 for

international service with Project Deaf India and second-place awards in

community service and club bulletins. Sirkin then presented the Rotarian

of the Year Award and the Bob Callis Award to Elmer Biggerstaff. Todd

Anderson and Russ Williams were named Ice Breakers of the Year, while

Roger McGonegal received the Community Service Award for his work with

the Reading by 9 program. Serving with Sawyer for 2000-01 Rotary year are

Richard Oberreiter, vice president; Robert Krone, treasurer; Jim de Boom,

secretary; Elmer Biggerstaff, Bob Silver, Richard Holmgren, Thyme

Hampton, Andy Campbell, Russ Williams, Steve Vickers and Art Walton,

directors. The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa meets Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

Yacht Club, then will go to the new Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol Office for a

tour and return to BCYC for dinner.

7:15 a.m. -- The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club meets at

Mimi’s Cafe.

Noon -- Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa meets at the Holiday Inn to hear Bob

Donelly discuss Orange County Model Train Engineers; Newport Beach-Corona

del Mar Kiwanis Club meets at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club; the

Exchange Club of Newport Harbor meets at the Riverboat Restaurant for a

business meeting; the Newport Irvine Rotary Club meets at the Irvine

Marriott.
