Ocean View Little League repeated as District 62 Majors Division

champion, but this time, it was the Reds who won the Tournament of

Champions, beating the Robinwood Brewers, 6-3, in the division final

played June 28 at Ocean View.

Last year, it was the Mets who brought the district banner to Ocean View.

The 2000 championship game pitted teams with outstanding pitching staffs.

Jeff Van Doornum started on the mound for Ocean View and gave up three

runs in three innings. Hank Conger relieved and struck out all nine

Brewers he faced.

Casey Becker got the starting nod for Robinwood and was relieved by

closer Scott Schauer, who struck out six batters without yielding a hit

in three innings.

“I thought we faced two dominant pitchers,” Ocean View Manager Yun Conger

said of Becker and Schauer. “Our guys just happened to be on.”

The Reds scored two runs on a walk and two hits in their first at-bat,

the big blow a two-RBI single by Mitchell Roemer with two out.

Roemer also collected an RBI in the third inning, and was part of a trio

of Ocean View hitters who had a big day.

Roemer, along with Jarett Carr and Adrian Conger, normally hit 6-8 in the

Reds lineup, moved to the 5-7 slots for the final because Ocean View

cleanup hitter Robert Peck was on vacation. All three came through, too,

as Carr started the Ocean View second with a double, then scored score on

Adrian Conger’s RBI single as the Reds grabbed the lead for good, 3-2.

Conger, who also scored on a passed ball in the third inning to make it

4-2, finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs.

“Those three guys hit the ball really well and they really came through

for us,” Yun Conger said. “They really gave us a big boost on offense.”

Trailing, 2-0, Robinwood got the boost it needed when Schauer belted a

two-run home run, scoring Casey Becker (who walked) to tie the score.

The Brewers scored their final run in the third on singles by Schauer and

Daniel Jones.

“I’m very pleased and proud of the way we played throughout the

tournament and the entire season,” Robinwood Manager Randy Schauer said.

“Ocean View is a very tough team and the ball just rolled in their

direction today. They are to be congratulated.”

Other members of Ocean View’s championship team include: Dylan Nicholson,

Garrett Willington, Kyle Engle, Jimmy Irwin, Noah Grego, and Coach Brian

Carr.
