Five years ago

The North defeats the South, 6-0, in the Orange County All-Star

football game. Costa Mesa High tailback Charles Chatman leads the South

with 24 rushing yards. Fellow Mustang backfield mate Dewayne Crenshaw

gains seven yards. Newport Harbor quarterback John Giordani comes in late

and completes two passes for 23 yards. The Sailors’ Mike Freeman makes

one seven-yard reception and Newport noseguard Bill Johns also plays for

the South.

Costa Mesa National Little League (14 and under) baseball team

eliminates rival Costa Mesa American Little League, 9-4, in the District

62 tournament. Kyle Conroy and Jason Scheafer each goes 3 for 3 to lead

CMNLL.

Newport Water Polo Foundation 17 and Under boys team beats the Puerto

Rico All-Stars, 7-6, to capture its third consecutive tournament title.

Chris Seib scores two goals.

Costa Mesa’s boys water polo team wins the Trabuco Hills tournament

with a 7-6 victory over Whittier. Todd Hylton leads the Mustangs with

three goals.

Ten years ago

Estancia linebacker Dan Petrone leads the South with seven solo

tackles as his team proves victorious, 22-6, over the North in the Orange

County All-Star football game. Estancia running back Josh Wojtkiewicz,

Corona del Mar cornerback Warren Johnson and Newport Harbor guard Joel

Patterson see action for the South squad.

Two Balboa Bay boys volleyball club teams win the U.S. Junior Boys

Volleyball Olympics. Newport Harbor’s Russell Gan is named tournament MVP

as his 16 and under team wins the crown over Torrance. Sailor teammate

Beau Sheward and Estancia’s Matt Fuerbringer are named to the tournament

first-team.

Balboa Bay’s 14 and under club captures the tournament title with a

three-set win over Santa Monica. CdM’s Brooke Hoppe gets the MVP award

and the Sea Kings’ Jeremy Mape is named to the first team.
