MISSION VIEJO - Newport Beach’s Pacific Coast Bobby Sox American 12

and under “Red” softball team dominated four opponents in the regional

qualifier at Mission Del Norte last weekend to advance to the National

tournament.

The Red team, along with the Blue squad, are only the second and third

teams to advance to the Nationals in Pacific Coast history. The National

tournament starts on July 27 at Buena Park.

In the championship game, Pacific Coast Red defeated Tustin South,

4-0, in seven innings for the second time in the tournament. Christie

Hamers threw a shutout for the win. Lauren Gega triggered a double play

to end the game

Pacific Coast Red beat Tustin, 2-1, in its final pool game. Michelle

Allred doubled, and was advanced to third by Debbie Yoder-Lee. Ashley

Gleason then singled Allred in for the winning run.

In its first game, Pacific Coast Red beat South Tustin, 5-2, in seven

innings. Hamers pitched a complete game for the victory. Pacific Coast

Red scored three in the sixth to break open a close 2-1 game.

Pacific Coast Red destroyed Mission Del Norte, 15-2, in the second

game. Gleason and Laura Meaut provided the game’s highlight with

back-to-back home runs. Coral Coleman pitched all four innings to pick up

the win.

In the third game, Pacific Coast Red got a 10-0 mercy rule win over

San Clemente. Gleason hit another home run and struck out seven batters

in three innings of relief pitching. Pacific Coast Red ace Hamers pitched

the first three innings, before resting for the championship game.

Pacific Coast Red’s pitching staff was helped by a solid defense.

Third baseman Gega and shortstop Sara Grumman flaunted their range and

robbed many opposing batters of hits. Darci Pennington converted a lot of

outs at second base, which she shared with Meagan McCullough and Katie

Daniels. Just like third base, Meaut shared first with Gega and did a

nice job.

The outfield of Yoder-Lee, Allred and Laura Locke provided more

suffocating defense, and Gleason was the catcher for all but three

innings of Pacific Coast Red’s four games.
