Forty-eight youngsters received scholarships to attend the summer art

camps at the Huntington Beach Art Center. Bill and Lorraine McCune

sponsored 40 of the students, and the rest were sponsored by local

residents and businesses. The camp includes art, dance, music and

literary sessions for children ages 6 to 11.

Sign-ups for the classes are still open. The weeklong sessions

continue until Aug. 25. The cost is $175 for one week of full-day

sessions and $100 for a week of half-day sessions. The center is at 538

Swimming lessons at Golden West

Red Cross-certified swimming lessons are scheduled to take place this

summer at Golden West College. The lessons are available for ages 6

months through adulthood.

The last session is from July 31 to Aug. 11.

The non-credit swimming courses are taught by aquatics experts. The

sessions meet Monday through Friday for two weeks in 30- to 45-minute

intervals.

The fee for each session is $33.

Smith Elementary’s staffer retires

Edith Oakley, a longtime staff member at Smith Elementary School,

retired this month. Oakley, 87, was a playground supervisor and crossing

guard at Main Street and Lake Park.

Golden West student takes top position

Rachelle Rodriguez, a Golden West College nursing student, was elected

to represent the college as the secretary and treasurer for the

California Student Nursing Assn. The 26-year-old Fountain Valley

resident’s position includes recording official meeting minutes while

working closely with the president and vice president, and handling the

association’s finances.

Rodriguez is doing her clinical studies in a medical surgery rotation

at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.

College for Kids offers cartooning

Golden West College has scheduled two cartooning workshops as part of

its popular College for Kids series. The workshops, taught by art faculty

member Carl Glassford, are for children 8 to 14.

The classes will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and

Fridays through July 26 in Fine Arts Room 207.

Participants will learn basic cartoon drawing and how drawing facial

expressions and body language communicates the story line. Human, animal

and object characters will also be studied.

All work will be done on paper with pencil and felt-tip pens. Each

participant should bring typing paper, a pencil and a fine-point,

felt-tip pen to the first session.

Seminars address breathing, memory

Golden West College will offer several seminars and workshops this

summer.

A new workshop, Breathing and Stretching to Empower Your Life, teaches

proper breathing and stretching for positive effects. The workshop will

be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. over six Saturdays -- beginning this

Saturday through Aug. 26 -- in the college’s Recreation Education Room

100. The fee is $58.

A Memory and Brain Power seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to noon

Saturday in Administration Room 17. Designed for ages 15 and older, the

class will teach participants how to remember people’s names, as well as

what you see and hear. The fee is $38.

An SAT-preparation seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays

and Wednesdays, beginning this Monday through Aug. 23. The staff of Ivy

West Educational Services will present test-taking strategies, critical

reading, sentence completion, arithmetic, algebra and geometry. The

seminar is $265.
