I got a kick out of [Ron Davis’] City Council “posturing” column [“The

importance of being an earnest columnist,” July 6].

It reminded me of the Oscar Wilde saying: “A cynic is one who knows

the price of everything but the value of nothing.”

Thought I’d bring this piece of comical information to your attention.

The dying eucalyptus trees at Bolsa Chica are now the most famous

eucalyptus trees in California, being the basis for the now-infamous

Bolsa Chica decision.

But here’s the rest of the story: The trees were important, so we were

told, because they were a perching site for hawks. A block or two away,

the state built, a few years ago, a nesting site for terns -- including

the endangered least terns.

Guess what the hawks in the eucalyptus trees like more than almost

anything?

They like to eat least terns....

I just finished reading the Independent and wanted to express my

absolute enjoyment of [Ron Davis’] column.

As a reader of several newspapers, my personal criteria for a good

columnist is simple: They can be a blithering idiot (opinionwise), but

they must be articulate, intelligent and witty. You, Ron, are a great

columnist.

I’m kind of sorry you won’t be running for City Council but very happy

we’ll be able to enjoy your column for a very long time to come.

You always add a debate, pause for thought or chuckle to Thursday

mornings.
