* AT ISSUE: We asked Newport Beach residents if they wanted to see the
city keep the land behind the library as open space.
I would truly like to see the City Council and the Planning Commission
keep some of our open space available for the residents of the community.
I’ve lived here for 20 years, and all I’ve seen is new houses and new
shopping centers. We need new parks for kids to play and families to go.
What about keeping what used to be a very charming and impeccable place
to come is now becoming just buildings. I would like the council to take
that into consideration because I don’t see evidence that that’s what
they care about today.

I think the city should be doing more to protect what’s left of our
open spaces. I’ve seen it disappear over the last 35 years. It’s very
discouraging and many of the new people here don’t realize what they’ve
lost already.

I feel very strongly about the fact that you want people to call about
the open space. I feel very strongly that we have to save what little is
left of the open space in our area.

Yes we should protect open spaces because there’s hardly any left and
it is extremely important to do so.

Why is it so easy to vote down an arts center or an addition to a
church, both of which are enhancements to our spiritual and cultural
life, and yet a hotel and conference center is on the brink of being
built? Is it only a matter of time until the Hyatt Newporter brings a
thousand-room expansion on us? All of us should be doing as much as we
can to protect what we have left of open space and keep our beach
atmosphere open.

I am very distressed about how they’re selling our open land. The
beautiful Castaways is a bunch of ticky-tacky houses now. And now the
Newport Dunes resort could take away that beautiful area that would make
a glorious park. I hope that we will put an end to all of this building.

The city should value the open space as many of the residents do, and
not build on that open space. We should look at buildings that need to be
redeveloped rather than build on open space.
