NEWPORT BEACH AQUATICS CLUB

The Newport Beach Aquatics Club is a year-round team dedicated to the

development of competitive swimmers. Workouts will be divided by age and

ability levels and will be coached by Ted Bandaruk and all-American coach

Rod Turner. Registration will be taken on site and an equipment fee of

$30 is payable to the swim coach at the first practice, then every three

months thereafter. There is also an annual U.S. Swimming fee of $35.

BASEBALL CAMP

Newport Beach will offer a weeklong baseball camp for kids ages 6 to

12 from July 31 to Aug. 4. Each camp runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and each

camper is asked to bring water, lunch and a snack each day. A baseball,

T-shirt and an evaluation will be given to each camper after the camp is

completed. The program will focus on baseball fundamentals through drills

and fun games in a relaxed setting.

BASKETBALL CAMP

Newport Beach will host a basketball camp for kids ages 7 to 14, from

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 31 to Aug. 4. Registration is $96 per player,

which includes a basketball, T-shirt and evaluation. Each camper is asked

to bring water, lunch and a snack.

ADULT, YOUTH BOATING

Newport Beach will is offering four-hour beginners’ workshops for

people ages 14 and up. The 8 a.m. to noon workshops are designed for

participants to become familiar with paddling calm bays in touring

kayaks. There will be an orientation on equipment, safety guidelines and

a three-hour on-water session on paddling techniques, wet exits and

in-water rescues. Registration is $65. A wetsuit is required and rentals

are available through the Southwind Kayak Center. Youngsters must have a

liability waiver signed by the parent.

CANOE / KAYAK CAMP

Youngsters ages 8 to 12 will learn basic kayaking and canoeing skills

in various weeklong camps offered by Newport Beach. Registration for each

session is $125 and there are 10 weeklong camps to choose from. Each day,

youngsters and their instructors will paddle to destinations around

Newport Bay, with the final day consisting of relay races and hot dogs at

the Newport Aquatic Center. Campers must pass a five-minute swim test and

they should bring a towel, sunscreen, wind breaker and snacks to each

camp. Locker rooms with showers will be available. A teen canoe/kayak

camp will also be available throughout July and August for kids ages 13

to 18.

CLIMBING CAMP

Designed for kids ages 9 to 16, this camp will teach proper techniques

for safe rock climbing, including how to tie proper knots, belaying

protocol and hand and foot technique. The purpose of this camp is to push

climbers to their limits while allowing them to expand their comfort

zones, build confidence and develop problem-solving skills. Camps will be

held at the ClimbX Indoor Rock Climbing Gym, 18411 Gothard St., Unit 1,

Huntington Beach. Registration is $90 and the camps will take place

throughout July and August.

ROCK CLIMBING

Rock-climbing classes of all levels will be taught throughout July and

August at the ClimbX Gym, 18411 Gothard St., Unit 1, Huntington Beach.

The registration fee is $55 and each class will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

FLAG FOOTBALL CAMP

Youngsters will improve football skills in a safe and noncompetitive

environment in a weeklong camp run by the city of Newport Beach. Players

will learn the rules of the game and improve their offensive and

defensive strategies. Each camper will receive a football, T-shirt and

evaluation. It is suggested campers bring water and a snack each day. The

camps are from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 7-11 and Aug. 21-25. Registration fee

is $88.

GOLF CAMP

Young golfers ages 6 to 14 may learn game fundamentals including grip,

stance, swing, putting, chipping and driving, along with rules and

etiquette. Each camper will receive a golf hat, T-shirt and evaluation.

The camp is sponsored by the city of Newport Beach and each camper is

asked to bring a snack, water and their own golf clubs each day of camp.

The five-day camp begins Aug. 7.

GOLF ETIQUETTE

Newport Beach will offer a class for golf etiquette for beginners on

Aug. 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. The classes will offer enough information about

golf rules and etiquette to allow playing immediately. The classes are

designed for youngsters ages 8 to 12 and a $7 material fee is payable to

the instructor.

GOLF RULES AND ETIQUETTE

A two-hour class on golf rules and etiquette will be offered to adults

from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 16. Registration is $30 and there is a $7 materials

GOLF CLASS

Designed for beginning and intermediate golfers, this class offered at

Newport Beach Golf Course will emphasizes stance, swing and use of clubs.

Students may bring their own clubs or rent clubs from the course, and

each student will be asked to purchase one bucket of practice balls per

lesson. Each class will last 90 minutes and registration is $45.

GYMNASTICS

Newport Beach will offer gymnastic training for kids ages 6 to 11

throughout the summer. Registration is $50 and instruction will be

offered in balance and tumbling, skills on the uneven parallel bars,

balance beams, rings and the vaulting horse. Student-to-instructor ratio

is approximately 8 to 1 and students enrolling in intermediate classes

must have instructor approval.

HORSE RIDING

There will be four horse-riding classes in July and August at

Christian Montessori School in Costa Mesa. Youngsters are asked to bring

a parent and learn to feed, groom, saddle and ride ponies. Participants

must wear hard-soled shoes with heels and long pants. Registration is

YOUTH ICE SKATING

The Ice Chalet in Costa Mesa will host four, eight-week ice skating

classes throughout the summer. There will be two classes offered for kids

ages 6 to 8 and two classes for kids ages 9 to 15. Registration for each

is $85 and skaters should arrive 15 minutes early for a class. The Ice

Chalet is in the Mesa Verde Center in Costa Mesa.

JAPANESE KARATE

The Japan Karate Federation, headed by chief instructor Shihan Fumio

Demura, will present classes of all skill levels for youngsters ages 5 to

15 during the summer. Registration is $50 for each level and the classes

will run through Sept. 11.

ROLLER HOCKEY CAMP

A weeklong roller hockey camp will be offered in Newport Beach from 9

a.m. to noon Aug. 14-18 for kids ages 7 to 14. Beginning- and

intermediate-level players will learn proper hand, stick and skating

techniques. Campers are asked to bring a helmet with a face cage, elbow

and knee pads, skates, athletic shoes, water and a snack to each day of

camp. Registration is $88, which includes a hockey stick, T-shirt and

evaluation.

SAILING CAMP

Newport Beach will offer eight-day sailing camps throughout the summer

for kids ages 8 to 12. The camps will run Tuesdays through Fridays for

two weeks; registration fee is $133 for each session. On-water skills

will be taught on new Sabots (8-foot sailboats), as well as rigging and

boat maintenance. To ensure safety, please bring a Coast Guard-approved

life jacket. No after-camp supervision will be provided.

BEGINNING SAILING

Newport Beach will offer beginning sailing classes for adults

throughout the summer at OCC. Classes include lectures and on-the-water

practice in Lido 14 dinghies. Students may learn the basics of sailing

terminology, rigging, safety, docking under sail, tacking, jibing and the

five points of sail. About 80% of class time is spent sailing, with two

to four people per boat.

SLOW-PITCH SOFTBALL

Signup deadline for the fall Newport Beach softball season for men,

women and coed leagues is Aug. 11. Weeknight adult leagues for all levels

of play will be available and registration is accepted on a team basis

only.

SOCCER CAMP

Newport Beach will offer weeklong soccer camps throughout the summer.

The camps are for kids ages 6 to 14 and the fee is $96. Camp times are 9

a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays July 31-Aug. 4, Aug. 14-18 and Aug. 21-25.

Players will learn various aspects of soccer, new techniques, skills and

tactics. Each camper will receive a soccer ball, T-shirt and an

evaluation. Youngsters are asked to bring water, lunch and a snack to

each day’s session.

SPORTS CAMP

A series of Mini Hawks introductory sports camps sponsored by Newport

Beach will offer fun for kids ages 4 to 7 throughout the summer. Each

weeklong camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will teach the basics in

basketball, soccer and baseball. Each camp is $88 with each camper

receiving a miniball and T-shirt. It is recommended for kids to bring

water and a snack to each camp day.

SPORTS DAY CAMP

Newport Beach will offer eight, five-day sports camps this summer for

youngsters who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. There

will be arts, crafts, cooperative games and weekly special event

activities will also be incorporated. Each week is built around a

specific theme and there will be an excursion to a theme park for each

camp. Registration is $120 and $112 for youngsters not going to the theme

park. Campers need to bring a lunch, snacks and sunscreen each day. A

camp T-shirt will be provided.

SURF CAMP

Both beginning and intermediate surf camps will be offered by Newport

Beach throughout the summer for ages 8 and up.

Wetsuits are strongly recommended and surfboards will be provided.

Campers must be capable of calmly handling themselves in the water and a

swim test will be given the first day of class. The instructor, Scott

Morgan, has 22 years of teaching experience and is certified in CPR and

first aid.

The first day of camp will meet at the 18th Street beach on the bay

side of Balboa Boulevard.

SURF CLASSES

Newport Beach will provide a series of instructional classes in the

areas of basic surfing and water safety from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturdays,

running from Aug. 8 to Sept. 9 for ages 8 and older.Classes will meet at

the Newport Pier. Registration is $63 and the first class will meet at

the 18th Street beach on the bay side of Balboa Boulevard.

TENNIS CLASS

Newport Beach tennis classes geared for players at all levels with all

levels of classes will be taught throughout the summer. Registration fee

is $50 per class, and each player must bring a new can of tennis balls to

the first session. There are also Friday player strategy classes for

doubles play from 9 a.m. to noon through Sept. 1 for $75. Serving clinic

classes will be held until Aug. 2, for $20 a course.

YOUTH TENNIS

Newport Beach will offer two levels of youth tennis classes for

youngsters of all skill levels. Level I is designed for youths beginning

to learn tennis. A new can of balls is requested on the first day of

class. The registration fee is $30 for youngsters 4 1/2 to 7 and $50 for

youths ages 8 to 17. Level II will be on continued skill development and

game play elements.

COED INDOOR VOLLEYBALL

Advanced, intermediate and recreation divisions will be offered on

Thursday, Sunday and possibly Wednesday evenings during the summer

months. All players must be members of the U.S. League Volleyball Assn.

Additionally, Players Medical Benefit Fund will partially or completely

reimburse and render financial assistance for injured players. Each team

must pay a fee of $10 per match directly to the referee.

JUNIOR WATER POLO

Newport Beach will sponsor a citywide junior water polo program open

to all third- through eighth-graders. The program, coached by Ted

Bandaruk, is in its 10th season with a philosophy that “everyone plays.”

There will be on-site registration with a game schedule handed out at the

first practice. A $30 equipment fee is due every three months and a $35

annual U.S. Water Polo Assn. membership is required. Games will be held

Saturday afternoons at Corona del Mar High.

SOFTBALL LEAGUES

Coed, men’s and women’s softball leagues will be offered by the city

of Costa Mesa for teams of all skill levels this summer. Teams will play

a 10-game season. Coed teams will play Sunday through Tuesday, the

women’s league will play on Wednesday’s and the men’s league will play

Tuesday through Friday. Fees are $400 per team, plus $10 cash umpire fee

per game. Leagues are scheduled to begin Sept. 18.

TENNIS CENTER ACTIVITIES

The Costa Mesa Tennis Center will offer an array of various social and

competitive tennis events for the advanced player, as well as the

beginner. There will be a “Men’s Night” Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m.

Matches are played in a round-robin doubles format and balls and

beverages will be provided. Fee is $6. Thursday nights will be “Ladies’

Night,” also from 7 to 9 p.m. Matches are played in a round-robin doubles

leagues will start up on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. Reservations are

required; no partner necessary in the inter-club play format. USTA men’s,

women’s junior teams and adult senior leagues are being formed. The Costa

junior tennis exchanges throughout the summer.

GROUP TENNIS LESSONS

The Costa Mesa Tennis Center will be offering group tennis lessons for

youngsters and adults of all ages throughout the summer. Registration is

FLAG FOOTBALL

The Costa Mesa Youth Flag Football program for youngsters in grades

three through eight will kick off with an Aug. 19 registration day at

Balearic Community Center from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration will continue

throughout that week until all the teams are full. The season opener for

this free recreation program is in early September and a proof of age is

required at the time of registration.

GYMNASTICS CLASSES

The city of Costa Mesa will offer various gymnastics and motor

development classes for youngsters ages 5 to 12 throughout the summer.

The class is designed for youngsters to enhance the confidence of

participants as they gain physical strength, flexibility, balance and

control. There are various skill-level classes, but the instructor’s

approval is required for intermediate-level classes.

PACIFIC COAST AQUATICS

The Pacific Coast Aquatics program will offer a variety of year-round

swim programs for all ages and all swim types. Learn correct stroke

technique in a fun and positive environment. Triathletes and

swim-for-fitness athletes are welcome. The PCA is a member of USS

Swimming and the USS Masters program. Fees are $25 to register and $35

per month, and activities will take place at the Newport Harbor High

Olympic Pool.
