Newport Beach residents have begun receiving notices from the city

reminding them to replace their old trash cans with newly approved

containers before Sept. 1.

Beginning this fall, city trash collectors will not pick up refuse

from noncompliant cans.

To guard against injuries to trash collectors from some types of

containers, the city decided to standardize cans.

About 15% of local residents have noncompliant cans. Trash collectors

will begin placing on those cans red-colored “X” stickers that explain

the new regulations.

As part of the program, Veterans Charities of Orange County has

volunteered to collect the old cans, recycle them and distribute new

containers for a small fee.Interested residents should call the

organization at (714) 547-0615.

For information on the new refuse container guidelines, call the

Newport Beach Refuse Division at (949) 644-3309, Ext. 6.
