Girls water polo: Newport 16 and under girls eliminated
ANAHEIM - Newport Harbor High’s 16-and-under girls water polo A
team quickened the heart rate of many of its fans in an exciting game
Wednesday, but it ultimately fell to the UC Davis All-Stars, 5-4, in
overtime at Katella High to finish play in the U.S. Water Polo Junior
Olympics.
The Sailors and UC Davis were entangled in a tense and close battle.
Newport goalie Terrin Cottam kept her team close with 11 saves, including
one on a four-meter shot.
“The entire team gave a well balanced effort,” Newport Coach Brian
Kreutzkamp said. “They really played well under stress. I appreciate the
all-out level of play they exhibited today.”
Jenna Murphy scored three goals to lead Newport. Paige Lansing had the
other Sailors goal. Newport finished the tournament 5-2.
Also on Wednesday, Corona del Mar’s 18-and-under girls water polo team
lost its final game of the tournament to finish 2-3.
On Monday, host Newport Harbor’s 18 and under girls water polo team
crushed Napa Valley, 10-0. Murphy and Jenna Booth each had four goals for
the Sailors. Newport Goalie Heather Deyden had two goals along with eight
saves. It lost its second game on Monday to the Claremont Outsider, 7-2.
Newport Harbor’s 16-and-under girls water polo A team won two games on
Monday at Valencia High. It defeated the Sierra All-Stars from
Sacramento, 10-4.
Murphy, who is playing on two Newport squads, led the Tars’
16-year-olds with five goals and Raelyn Ritchie had two. Newport defeated
ORCA B in the second game, 9-1.
Newport’s 16 and under B girls team won a forfeit game against Chicago
Land on Monday before dropping its second affair to the Outlaws from
Central California, 7-1.
