It’s going to be an interesting election come November. There are nine

positions available between Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach city

seats and school boards, including three hot slots on the seven-member

Huntington Beach City Council.

Two seats are being left vacant by Councilman Dave Sullivan, who

cannot run because of term limits, and Councilman Tom Harman, who will

not run because he is running for the 67th Assembly District seat.

Councilwoman Pam Julien filed for reelection.

Last week, the filing deadline was extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Former Councilman John Thomas, who is facing felony charges for

alleged dumping in the Bolsa Chica wetlands, is officially a candidate.

But neither businessman Ed Laird, a close friend of controversial Mayor

Dave Garofalo, nor Planning Commission Chairman Gerald Chapman had their

papers in by press time Wednesday afternoon.

Two vocal Garofalo critics filed -- Debbie Cook and Connie J.

Boardman. Others who filed are Lou J. Baker, former newspaper columnist

Bill Borden, Joseph J. Carchio, Gil Coerper, Thomas Doney, Chuck Downing,

J. Devin Dwyer, Steve J. Garcia, Robert Johnson, Diane Lenning, Mark W.

Lewis, Joey Racano, Norman Westwell and James A. Young.

Huntington Beach City Clerk Brockway and City Treasurer Shari

Freidenrich both filed and appear to be uncontested.

In Fountain Valley, both incumbents, Chuck Conlosh and Larry Crandall,

have filed for reelection to their seats. They will be challenged by

residents John Briscoe, Cheryl Brothers, Doug Henry and Mark McCurdy.

On the school side, Huntington Beach Union High School District Board

of Trustees incumbent Michael Simons is running, as are newcomers Khosrow

Tadayon and Debbie Holmes. Longtime board member Bonnie Bruce has decided

not to run for another term.

Incumbent Peg Edey has filed in hopes of retaining her seat on the

Ocean View School District Board of Trustees, with Barbara A. Boskavich,

Andrea Graboff, Pam Ogdon and Jim Peters also vying for one of the two

seats available. Trustee Linda Kovach did not file for reelection.

Neither Fountain Valley School District nor the Huntington Beach

School District will hold elections this year because the incumbents were

the only candidates to file. Julie Hoxsie and Joanne Lew will hold onto

their Fountain Valley School District seats. And Catherine McGough and

Brian Rechsteiner will serve another term on the Huntington Beach City

School District Board of Trustees.
