Former Daily Pilot general manager Charles Neiswender died Aug. 16 in

Stamford, Conn., of throat cancer. He was 74.

Mr. Neiswender graduated from USC and spent several years working for

newspapers in the Southern California market. He was a reporter for the

Wilmington Press Journal, the Long Beach Independent-Press Telegram and

the old Los Angeles Mirror, where the Greater Los Angeles Press Club

honored him with awards.

He later served as general manager for the Los Angeles Times-owned

Daily Pilot.

Mr. Neiswender’s fluency in Spanish enabled him to serve two years as

general manager for a Spanish-language daily in El Salvador.

In 1973, he was named press and community relations secretary to the

now late Los Angeles County Supervisor James A. Hayes.

Later in life, Mr. Neiswender moved to Connecticut, where he worked

with a firm that recruits executives to help Third World countries.
