Newport Harbor High’s football team comes back from a loss to Orange

(later reversed by forfeit) with a 32-13 victory over Marina. Danny

Pulido hauls down three touchdown receptions from Justin Giordani for

Newport.

Corona del Mar’s football team wins its second game of the year by

crushing Garden Grove, 48-7. CdM quarterback Josh Walz throws one

touchdown pass and rushes for two more.

Estancia’s football team shuts out La Quinta, 28-0. The Eagles’ Bachy

Gonzalez rushes for 151 yards while Jeff Perry throws two touchdown

passes.

Costa Mesa’s football team’s comeback attempt falls short to

Westminster, 12-8. The Mustangs’ Ray Ohrel scores on a touchdown run in

the fourth quarter and adds a two-point conversion. He finishes with 191

yards.

Newport Harbor’s girls volleyball team wins its season opener, 15-13,

15-12, 15-5, over Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana. Jeannette Hecker has eight

kills for the Tars while Melissa Snow gets seven kills and nine digs.

Estancia’s boys water polo team hammers Valencia, 22-7. The Eagles’

Joe Huang scores five times and Chad Bollenbach adds four goals.

Ten years ago

Newport Harbor’s football team bombs Laguna Beach, 41-7, in its first

game. Newport’s Marc Tagleferri, a transfer from Santa Monica, rushes for

119 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries. Steve Walker throws two

touchdown passes for the Sailors.

CdM’s football team gets shut out by a tough Huntington Beach team,

28-0, in its season opener. The Sea Kings’ Todd Kehrli provides most of

CdM’s offense, completing 11 of 21 passes for 101 yards. George Dickson

collects four receptions for CdM.

Estancia’s water polo team loses to Palos Verdes, 12-2. Peter Shinner

and Luis Uceda score for the Eagles.

The Southern California College women’s volleyball team takes third

place at the Christ College Irvine Labor Day Festival. The Vanguards’

Heather Frewin and Leslie Lastrapes are named to the all-tournament team.

Corona del Mar resident Craig Etchegoyan wins the boys 13-14 age group

in the WSA District 5 surfing competition.
