Rotary District 5320 is looking for four non-Rotarians 25 to 40 years

old who would like to participate in a 30-day Rotary Group Study Exchange

to Australia in March 2001.

Rotary pays for transportation to and from Australia and local

Australian Rotary clubs provide housing, meals, visits to local tourist

attractions and experiences in similar businesses as the visiting team

members.

“It’s a chance to learn how your business or profession works in

Australia as well as Australian family life,” said Wendell Sawyer,

president of the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club.

Team members must secure the 30 days off from their employer and pay

for their personal expenses (film, postcards, etc.) and help plan the

visit to Orange County for the Group Study Exchange Team from Australia,

which will be here in May 2001.

For more information or an application, contact International Service

directors Thyme Hampton, Newport-Balboa, at (714) 546-4990; Gene Koch,

Newport Beach Sunrise, at (949) 631-5240; or Pamela Morris, Newport

Irvine, at (949) 759-1320.

Application deadline is Oct. 31 and candidate interviews will be held

Nov. 4.

SANDCASTLE SUNDAY: Don’t forget to save some time Sunday to visit

the 39th annual Sandcastle Contest sponsored by the Commodores Club of

the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce. Contestants will begin to

build their castles at 10 a.m. and will be ready for judging by early

afternoon as they compete for cash prizes and plaques.

Representatives from Newport Beach’s sister city -- Okasaki, Japan --

will join with Commodore Club members to serve as judges for the event.

The public can view the process and the finished castles until 5 p.m. at

Corona del Mar State Beach. Come on down and play in the sand.

WHAT A PLACE: I went with the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club a couple

weeks ago to one of the best-kept secrets in Newport Beach, the Newport

Sports Collection Foundation. It’s 4,000 square feet full of sports

memorabilia -- baseball, basketball, hockey, golf, Olympics, pros and

colleges.

Some of the displays brought tears to my eyes as I remembered players

and teams from years gone by. One moving display was made by a

13-year-old junior high student on baseball’s Negro Leagues.

You will find autographed baseballs, footballs, basketballs, jerseys,

hand-carved wooden golf clubs, a USC room and a UCLA closet.

Located at 100 Newport Center Drive and capably run by general manager

Kellie Newcombe, the museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through

Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Its Web site iso7

www.newportsportscollection.orgf7 .

It’s a great place to take your kids or grand kids.

CANNERY REUNION: It has been a year since our beloved Cannery

Restaurant closed its doors to the public. The summer of 1999 saw a

series of special closing parties for various constituencies in the

harbor area, sponsored by the Daily Pilot, as the Cannery was toasted for

its years of good food and service to the community.

Teri Hatleberg, the former general manager of the Cannery, announced

that the Cannery will be holding its first staff reunion at 7 p.m. Sept.

19 at Malarkey’s Irish Pub, 3011 Newport Blvd., Newport Beach.

All former employees are invited. No reservations are necessary. Just

bring your the memories of the good times you had at the Cannery.

WORTH REPEATING: From the Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis

Club’s Scuttlebutt:

“Don’t judge a man by how he looks to people. You can’t see what’s

inside of him.”

SERVICE CLUB MEETINGS: Want to get more involved in your community,

make new friends, network, or to give something back to your community?

Try a service club. You are invited to attend a club meeting this coming

week. Many clubs will buy your first guest meal for you.
