You think Newport Harbor High will be out to avenge the lone blemish

on their 1999 championship season? The Sailors are loaded, plain and

simple. They feature returning quarterback Chris Manderino, a danger in

the backfield, and a loaded defensive unit, headed by a big, strong

middle linebacker in Alan Saenz, a returning All-CIF performer. Marina

will have to have a complete game if the Vikings hope to escape with the

upset victory at Davidson Field. Last year’s score: Marina 21, Newport

Harbor 21 (tie)...

Edison High has too much for Capistrano Valley High to handle,

although strange things are known to happen in rivalry series. Look for

Edison’s ground game to churn up the yardage, and Charger quarterback

Richard Schwartz to keep the Cougars off balance with his sharp passing

game. Last year’s score: Edison 42, Capistrano Valley 27...

One big advantage Huntington Beach High has in its Saturday day game

with Hueneme High is that the Vikings had to make the long road trip from

Oxnard. Both teams favor the run, but one thing the Oilers need to be

wary of is Hunemene’s team speed...

Talk about speed: Carson High has the patent on it. That, and talent,

which makes the Colts an extremely dangerous opponent for Fountain Valley

High. With its offensive backfield relatively intact from last year’s

championship season, Carson has the horses to win this one...

The Pacifica-Ocean View matchup could go down to the wire. Both teams

have new quarterbacks, but the Mariners had a deeper offensive backfield.

The Seahawks’ success lies in their ability to containing a well-balanced

Pacifica offense.
