LETTER OF THE WEEK

I don’t see any “out-of-control concern” in our community over

development (“Chilling effect on developers could take a toll,” Sept. 9).

Rather, I see a legitimate concern about inappropriate projects proposed

for inappropriate areas in Newport Beach.

I refer specifically to the proposed Dunes resort; it makes me shudder

to think of such a large, bulky structure plunked down on a narrow strip

of water-level sand, looming over an equally narrow channel of precious

Back Bay water. Has anyone tracked the building’s shadow? They even make

them do that in New York City.

Could no new projects really mean no new jobs and a stagnant economy?

Do many people who work in resort hotels, retail stores, insurance

offices and semiconductor manufactures live in Newport Beach? I doubt it.

If the city needs “fuel” for its engine, how about getting our property

taxes back from state government, which hijacked a portion of them in the

early ‘90s to balance its budget and now, with a big surplus, won’t give

them back.

There are better solutions than saying “yes” to development.
