Devin Kato, Lisa Vance and Daisy Yu of Huntington Beach received

scholarships from Bank of America. The students were chosen based on

their written statements and round-table discussions by a judging panel

of local civic and business leaders.

University honors college instructor

Golden West College instructor Dennis Lynch was chosen as this year’s

UCI Extension Distinguished Instructor.

Lynch has been teaching in UC Irvine’s international business program

for five years and has taught as a Golden West College adjunct instructor

for three years in management, marketing and international and global

business.

The university recognized Lynch for his outstanding teaching skills

and for his service as an advisory board member who helped revise the

business program’s curriculum.

Lynch has been working in international business for 20 years and is a

trade consultant who advises clients on how to enter into foreign

markets.

Golden West athletes continue college careers

Dozens of Golden West College athletes will continue their college

careers this fall at various four-year universities across the nation.

Many of the university-bound Rustlers earned scholarships for their

noteworthy athletic achievements while attending college, and all of them

will continue competing in their respective sports.

Albert Gasparian, the college’s athletic director and the women’s

volleyball coach, said the athletic scholarships received by students are

valued at about $500,000 a year.

Golden West College’s student athletes placed first in several areas

last year. Four state titles were achieved in women’s volleyball, women’s

water polo, and men’s and women’s swimming.

Other highlights include men’s volleyball, placing second in the

state; men’s water polo, finishing third in the state; and the baseball

team making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.Rustler athletes

attending four-year colleges this fall to play baseball are Eric Archer,

Cal State Northridge; Phil Archer, Cal State Northridge; Nate Beucler,

Cal State Long Beach; Dan Candela, Concordia University in Irvine; Jeremy

Hanson, Cal State Northridge; Ty Harper, University of Alabama; Bobby

Mayorga, Chapman University; Miguel Mendoza, Cal State Chico; and Mike

Miller, Chapman University.Basketball players include Rodney Clarke,

Cumberland College; Billy Curry, Cal State Monterey Bay; Matt Horvath,

Cal State Monterey Bay; Jeff Jensen, Hawaii Pacific College; Ben Rogers,

Hope International University; Amy Pace, Missouri Valley College; and

Kelly Medlen, University of Redlands.

Football players include Ramez Ammari, Bethany College; Sila Brown,

Northeastern University; Michael Daniels, Kansas Wesleyan University;

Peter Dodosh, University of New Haven; Jon Dorenbos, University of Texas

at El Paso; Will Long, Mississippi Valley State University; Vinni Mesa,

Minot State College; J.D. Stern Olivet, Nazarene College; Eti Taula,

Arkansas State University; and Tim Thurman, Cal Poly Pomona.

Golf players include Jeff Greenfield, UC Santa Barbara, and Eric

Newman, Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Softball players are Dani Garcia, UC Riverside, and Jen McCann, Cal

State Dominguez Hills.

Swimmers include Christian Harcsas, Arizona State University; Danny

Johnson, University of the Pacific; Alyson Edoff, Drury College; Deborah

Hoyt, UC San Diego; and Kirsten Rich, USC.

Track and field athletes include Juan Columbie; Cal State Long Beach;

Beckie Sweatman, Azusa Pacific University; Kelley Saunders, UC San Diego;

Huong Lam, UCLA; and Katy Zimmon, Cal State Long Beach.

Volleyball players include Lori Daedelow, Oregon State University;

Julie Renfrow, Wichita State University; Rebecca Larsen, UC Irvine; and

Travis Nelson, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne.

Water polo players include Chris Burress, California Baptist College;

Danny Johnson, University of the Pacific; Marko Markovic, Queens College;

Cal State Long Beach; and Jennifer Tarasut, Cal State Bakersfield.

Health care foundation awards 2 Fountain Valley students

Tenet Healthcare Foundation granted scholarships to two Fountain

Valley students. Azadeh Nasibi is attending UC Irvine and majoring in

economics and computer information science. Christian Austin is attending

Long Beach City College and majoring in English.

The scholarships ranged from $500 to $2,000.
