OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT

ISSUE: CLASS-SIZE REDUCTION

Vote: 4-0, with Trustee Linda Kovach absent

Summary: The school board agreed to continue the district’s class-size

reduction program for kindergarten through third grades. The district has

completed an application for the program to request $3.9 million in

funds.

ISSUE: MEMORIALS

Vote: 5-0

Summary: Permanent memorials for deceased students or staff will be

implemented in the form of scholarships, plantings, or collections of

books or items of historical or educational significance.

ISSUE: GYMNASIUM-AUDITORIUMS

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved the construction of a gymnasium-auditorium

at each of the four middle schools.

HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT ISSUE: CLASS-SIZE REDUCTION

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board agreed to continue its class-size reduction program

for kindergarten through third grades. The district has completed the

application for the program, which will cost roughly $2.5 million.

ISSUE: SCHOOL-READINESS LIAISON

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board agreed to establish a new classified position, a

school-readiness liaison. The position stems from the School Readiness

Initiative, which provides funds to support the development of

school-readiness measures for children who have not yet entered school.

The liaison will work with families in the community to identify and

prioritize families’ needs, assist families in connecting with

appropriate agencies that provide early care and education to young

children, and coordinate workshops and training in identified topics.

ISSUE: INSIDE THE OUTDOORS

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved the contract with the Orange County

Department of Education for the Inside the Outdoors program for students

at Eader, Hawes, Kettler, Moffett and Peterson elementary schools. Third-

through fourth-grade students will attend one-day programs held at Dana

Point, Caspers Wilderness Park, San Joaquin Marsh, Upper Newport Bay, Key

Ranch, Crystal Cove State Park and Modjeska Canyon Wilderness Preserve.

Depending on the location, the programs will present information about

such topics as birds, plants, marine life, geology and ecology.

Here’s a rundown of some of the action taken at the Sept. 14 meeting:

FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT

ISSUE: CLASS-SIZE REDUCTION

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board agreed to continue the class-size reduction program

in kindergarten through third grades for the school year. Funding will be

based on the final number of students but is estimated to be $2.1

million.

ISSUE: TEXTBOOKS

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved a resolution stating that each student in

the district has sufficient textbooks and instructional materials in each

subject, which qualifies the district to be eligible to receive state

funds.

ISSUE: ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION PROGRAM

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved the application for funding for the

English Language Acquisition Program. The program could provide the

district with $100 in state funding for each English learners in fourth

through eighth grades.

ISSUE: STATE BUDGET

Vote: No vote

Summary: Revisions of the state budget that has been signed by the

governor include several revisions. Of the most significant was the

elimination of the deficit applied to revenue limit funding. The deficit,

which was at about 7%, is now at zero.

The district did not receive equalization funding and is waiting for

past special education deficits to be paid.

The district’s net revenue increased 8.52%.
