Darryl Poston can only get better.

The Edison High Charger running back didn’t start the season at the

peak of his game. A sore back prevented him from starting in the opening

game against El Toro and limited his performance to 56 yards in 13

carries, but his recovery is showing on the field.

“He’s much better now than he was in the opener,” said Edison Coach

Dave White, adding that Poston, 17, is a respected team leader despite

his quiet demeanor. “He’s not at 100% yet, but I think the pain is on its

way out and he’s closer to his potential.”

That potential played an integral part of Edison’s 30-7 routing of

Capistrano Valley Friday at Huntington Beach High’s Sheue Field.

Poston, a 5-foot-11, 185 pound senior, bounced back from the season

opener to run 139 yards on 16 carries, more than double that of his

earlier game with only three extra plays.

“I just love having the chance to help out my team and use my

abilities,” said Poston, one of four team captains for the Chargers.

“Playing the game is just something I’ve always wanted to do.

Poston has been playing football for the last 10 years, and would have

played longer had he not been turned away from the playing field for

being too young. He joined the Edison Chargers after friends convinced

him to attend the high school.

“I was planning to go to school someplace else, but I’m sure glad I

didn’t,” he said. “This team this year is like a family, and it makes the

game all the more fun.”
