Nearing the Century Mark

Dave White says that it’s no big deal, but, he’s about to turn 100.

The Edison High football coach, now in his 15th season at the school,

is three victories shy of reaching 100 wins in his varsity coaching

career. With eight games to go this season, it’s a safe bet that White, a

former Charger himself, will reach that plateau.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” he said of the mark. “Hopefully,

I will be able to pick up that 100th win this season.”

When you take into account that he quarterbacked the Chargers for two

years, White, actually, has surpassed 100 wins.

As a junior, the 1972 Chargers went 6-2-1. His senior year, Edison’s

1973 squad finished 7-2.

As a player and coach, White already has 110 wins with the Green and

Gold.

“Eventually, if you stay around long enough, it’s going to happen,” he

said of the victories. “But you never know what’s going to happen from

year to year, because there’s different chemistry with each team. What

makes this (coaching) fun is the players and coaches. More than half of

our coaches at all three levels (varsity, junior varsity, freshman) are

ex-Edison players.”

The memories are plentiful for White (97-55-2 overall), who took over

for Bill Workman, the architect of seven Sunset League and three CIF Big

5 Division championships during an important 13 year period that shaped

the Edison football program.

White has guided the Chargers to a pair of Sunset titles (back-to-back

in 1989-90).

“Coaching’s still fun to me, and I’m still excited each year,” he

concluded. “When it stops being fun - that’s when it’s time to step

down.”
