Five events to entertain you through the weekend into the week.

Today

Now that’s entertaining . . . “Entertaining Mr. Sloane,” that is. At 2

p.m. today, there will be a pay-what-you-will performance of the Joe

Orton comedy at South Coast Repertory’s Second Stage. A minimum $5

donation, cash only, is suggested, and there is a limit of two tickets

per person. The play runs through Oct. 22, with performances at 7:45 p.m.

Tuesday through Sunday and matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $18-$47, with discounts available. The repertory is at 655

Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. (714) 708-5555.

Sunday

The sweet sound of violins will waft through Lido Isle when the

Hutchins Consort plays at 4 p.m. in St. James Episcopal Church. The

consort is the first permanent ensemble of professional musicians to

perform on the octet of acoustically matched violins crafted by luthier

Carleen Hutchins. A reception will follow the concert. Free, but

donations are accepted. The church is at 3209 Via Lido, Newport Beach.

(949) 640-4707.

Monday

Emily Dickinson will live again at the Newport Beach Central Library

when it presents “A Very Special Evening with Julie Harris and Charles

Nelson Reilly” at 7 p.m. The duo will speak on their involvement with

“The Belle of Amherst,” a one-person play about the famed poet now

showing at the Laguna Playhouse. The free program, sponsored by the

Newport Beach Arts Commission, will be held in the library’s Friends

Meeting Room, 1000 Avocado Ave. (949) 717-3801.

Tuesday

Go digital, or at least go look at digital prints by Orange Coast

College art instructor Lisa Bloomfield. This is the last day to view her

work in the OCC’s Photo Gallery, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show is

free. OCC is at 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. (714) 432-5520.

Wednesday

Talk about a book. A literature discussion group meets at 7 p.m.

Wednesdays at Borders Books, Music & Cafe at South Coast Plaza, 3333 Bear

St., Costa Mesa. The discussion is free. (714) 432-7854.
