COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College was a 2-1 winner in men’s soccer

Tuesday as the Pirates overcame an early red card to prevail against

visiting Riverside CC.

Freshman defender Chris Newcomer picked up a red card in the 32nd

minute after making a hard play for the ball, leaving the Pirates

shorthanded the rest of the way.

“We didn’t think it should have been a red card, but that’s the way it

goes,” Orange Coast Coach Laird Hayes said. “It was tough to play 10

against 11 from the 32nd minute on, but we stepped up and did a great

job.”

Jesus Cervantes got Coast on the board early, scoring in the fifth

minute off a pass from Aaron Siemers.

Riverside’s Jeremiah Nix tied the game in the 46th minute, but the

Pirates didn’t take much time to regain the lead.

In the 53rd minute, Siemers took a pass in the slot from Chance Daniel

and he put it past Tiger keeper Roman Dominguez to give OCC the 2-1 lead.

Pirate goalie Hilario Arriaga had four saves for Coast, which improved

to 5-1-4 overall, 1-0-1 in the OEC. Riverside fell to 3-5-1, 0-2.
