TONIGHT’S GAME

Huntington Beach vs. Mission Viejo...MV by 4

(at Mission Viejo High, 7 p.m.)

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Marina vs. Westminster...Marina by 10

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

Mater Dei vs. Edison...MD by 4

(at Orange Coast College, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View vs. Costa Mesa...CM by 6

(at Newport Harbor High, 7 p.m.)

Warren vs. Fountain Valley...FV by 12

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

And here’s why...

Having tasted victory for the first time this season with last week’s

win over Capistrano Valley, Huntington Beach High (1-2) will find the

going much tougher against a well-balanced Mission Viejo team that is

2-1. The Diablos have a potent offensive attack, but have been prone to

turnovers in their first three games. For the Oilers to notch win No. 2,

they’ll have to control the ball much of the night in order to keep the

Mission Viejo offense off the field. Teams did not meet last year...

Unbeaten Marina High (3-0) is flying high after posting successive

road wins over Newport Harbor and Mayfair, but Friday’s nonleague affair

with neighborhood rival Westminster might be tougher than expected.

Westminster can play the role of spoiler here, but Marina has too much

talent, a defense that the Lions will find hard to penetrate, and will be

well prepared for this one. Last year’s meeting: Marina 42, Westminster

26...

Like Westminster, Edison High (3-0) catches powerful Mater Dei (2-1)

in an interesting spot. The Monarchs are coming off a tough, 31-28 loss

to the nation’s top-rated prep team, Concord De La Salle, and on the

heels of that comes a meeting with a very talented Edison squad. This

game could come down to the play of the quarterbacks, and both schools

have big time players at the spot. The edge goes to Mater Dei because of

the Monarchs’ experience in big game showdowns, not to mention their

staying power. Teams did not meet last year...

Ocean View High (2-1) faces a tough task in Costa Mesa (3-0), but the

Seahawks have the stuff to make this one close. In order to win on the

road, Ocean View must contain a Costa Mesa offense that can put points on

the scoreboard in a hurry. The Mustangs survived a close call last week

against Westminster (a 24-22 win). Is there another potential upset in

the making? Teams did not meet last year...

Fountain Valley High (2-1) will be looking to return to the win column

against a talented Warren team (1-2). The Barons will have too much on

both sides of the ball for the Bears to deal with, and Warren, which

opened the season with three home games, will find out that life on the

road isn’t easy. Teams did not meet last year.
