Junior All-American Football: Midget team almost comes back

The Newport Mesa Seahawks’ Spencer Link scored two touchdowns, but

it wasn’t enough as the Midget team (ages 12-14) lost to the Mission

Viejo Cowboys, 28-21, Saturday.

Link ran in first score when he raced around the corner of the

Cowboys’ defense on the Seahawks’ third offensive play of the game.

Newport Mesa quarterback threw a long touchdown pass to Chris Hernandez

for another score. And then Link got his second touchdown in the fourth

quarter to bring the score to 28-21.

Mission Viejo kept the ball for the last six minutes of the game to

stave off a Newport Mesa comeback.

The Seahawks were still in the game despite committing 11 penalties

for 125 yards, including seven 15-yard penalties.

The Seahawks look to redeem themselves Saturday when they take on the

Irvine Chargers at University High at 3 p.m.

In other NMJAAF action:

Jr. Midget Seahawks 34, Riverside Cowboys 0

The Jr. Midget Seahawks (ages 11-13) as they posted a shutout victory

over the visiting Riverside Cowboys.

The Seahawks’ offense scored on all five of their first-half

possessions with Shaun Mohler, Trevor Theriot and Marc Quarles each

rushing for a touchdown.

Newport-Mesa’s Jr. Midget quarterback Casey Peters threw for two

touchdowns, connecting with Matt Silva on a fly pattern. And Peters also

hit Quarles for a screen pass that led to a score.

The offensive line that opened up holes for the rushing and provided

pass protection for Peters were led by Brett Vosseller, Nathan Stoneman,

Sean Goodman, Brent Ogden, Steve Hancock and Pat Hill.

The defense recorded a shutout with solid performances turned in by

Ricky Sepulveda, Anthony Santos, Chad Spann, Damian McKenzie, Matt

Collier and Nathan Packer. Patrick Williams intercepted a pass and ran it

back 60 yards. And Matt Erickson anchored the secondary, which did not

allow a complete pass throughout the game.

The Seahawks open league play as visitors against La Mirada, this

weekend.

Compton Titans 16, Jr. Pee Wee 6

The Jr. Pee Wee Seahawks (ages 9-11) visited the Compton Titans and

returned home with a loss.

The Seahawks were off to good start to begin the game. Their opening

drive featured running plays as Robbie Lusk, William O’Brien and Carlo

Valdes led the charge. The drive was capped off by a 3-yard run by Lusk

for a touchdown. The Seahawks’ offensive line was led by Corbin McNutt,

P.J. Simpson, Justin Elbourn, Michael Jugan, Garrett Amoroso, Erik Rask,

Brian Lawler and Troy Hall.

O’Brien also intercepted a pass for the defense. The defensive line

played just as hard was and was led by Isaac Abrego, Kevin Dearen, Danny

Malycky, Sean Berkley, Travis Prickett and Jed Flores.

Clinic Seahawks 14, Huntington Beach Dolphins 0

The Newport Mesa Clinic Seahawks didn’t allow a touchdown for the

third straight time this season, in a matchup against Huntington Beach,

Saturday at Bonita Creek Park.

The Seahawks were sparked by a pair of touchdowns coming from Austin

Raiger an then Bucko Theriot.

The scores were set up by blocks from Scott Chene, Michael Ensign,

Joey Dicaprio and Chase Lanting.

Steve Coleman, Drew Littlefair, Nick Svendsen and Kyle and Scott Chene

led the defensive front.

The defensive secondary shut down the Dolphins’ passing attack with

Troy Bundy, Austin Raiger and Bucko Theriot, each intercepted a pass.

The 7-8 year-olds of the Junior Clinic Seahawks scored twice against

the Mission Viejo Cowboys White team.

First, Parker Norton got a touchdown run. And DJ Hauser recovered a

fumble that later turned into a Seahawks score.

On offense, Michael Taormina, Austin Blodgett and Nick Taormina ran

hard in the backfield, while lineman Buzzy Yokoyama, Hauser, Parker

Lanting and Steve Clapp made key blocks.

The defensive charge was led by Trent Anderson, JD Abbott and Ryan

Hatcher.
