Estancia wins Sweepstakes

YUCAIPA - The Estancia High boys cross country team, behind

individual Division III champion Humberto Rojas, won its fourth straight

title Saturday at the Yucaipa Invitational at Yucaipa High.

Combined with a third-place finish by the girls team, the Eagles also

captured the event’s Sweepstakes title (combined boys and girls) for the

second straight fall.

Rojas finished the three-mile course in 16:11, while teammates Mike

Casillas (third in 16:32), Luis Sevogiano (eighth, 17:01), Geraldo Orozco

(ninth, 17:06) and Aaron Van Geem (12th, 17:18), also led the boys

efforts. Estancia’s 33 team points were 34 better than second-place Yucca

Valley.

Liz Huipe was second (19:59) and Diana Rosete third (20:39) to pace

the Estancia girls, who posted 78 points, behind Perris (63) and Yucca

Valley (77).

Ludi Valdez (20th, 23:39), Araceli Morales (25th, 24:01), Lindsay

Freeman (28th, 24:32) and Jessica Butler (29th, 24:34) also fared well

for Estancia in the girls Division III race.

In other cross country action Saturday:

The Newport Harbor boys won the Division II team title at the Stanford

Invitational, contested on the campus golf course.

Chris McMillen was sixth for the Sailors, completing the 3.1-mile

course in 16:28 to pace the Tars, whose 120 points were 33 better than

second-place Jesuit of Charmichael.

Senior Amber Steen was sixth for the Harbor girls (20:03), who

finished 10th as a team.

Other Newport boys in the 286-runner field included Jesus Santana

(14th, 16:58), John Peschelt (22nd, 17:09), Ivan Romero (39th, 17:29),

Joel Thurman (45th, 17:39) and Chris Negrete (54th, 17:46.)

Freshman Lauren Paul, who finished 61st in 22:02, also ran well for

the Harbor girls.

The Corona del Mar High girls finished fourth in the Division I race.

In high school water polo - Newport Harbor struck with seven in the

last eight mintues to snap out of a 9-9 tie and roll to a 16-10 nonleague

boys water polo victory over host University High Saturday. Ryan Cook led

with seven goals, followed by Peter Belden and Steven Jendrusina, with

three apiece as Newport improved to 6-3. The JVs were 10-0 winners over

University.

Corona del Mar High product Garrett Gentry of UC Irvine, a freshman,

scored to tie it at 6-6 against visiting Pepperdine, but the hosts fell

in nonconference play, 7-6.

In college men’s soccer, Vanguard shot visiting Biola down, 1-0, on a

Diego Goni goal in Golden State Athleic Conference play. Vanguard is now

5-3, 2-0 in the GSAC.

In college women’s soccer, host Vanguard dropped a 1-0 decision to

Biola, falling to 6-4, 1-1.

In community college cross country, Orange Coast’s women were fourth

with Heather Shurtleff third in 18:48 at the Mesa Invitational at the Del

Mar Racetrack. Other leaders from Coast in the women’s event were

Lindsay Allen (19th, at 20:00), Laura Weaver (23rd in 20:10, and Nadine

Engel (39th in 21:04).

In the men’s race, Orange Coast was fifth, paced by Tony Magana (22nd

in 21:10) and Victor Lopez (34th in 21:25).

Vanguard University lost a 16-14, 15-4, 15-13 GSAC decision to

visiting Fresno Pacific in women’s volleyball, dropping VU to 0-7 in the

GSAC.
