TODAY

Give your child an education in classical music. Pacific Symphony

Orchestra will open its 2000-01 Mervyn’s Musical Mornings Family Concert

Series with “What’s Your Major?” at 10 and 11:30 a.m. The 45-minute

concerts, held at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, are intended

to expose children 4 to 11 and their families to symphonic music. The

first concert will focus on the works of child prodigies, such as Mozart

and Mendelssohn. There also will be a musical treasure hunt, free to

ticket holders, at 9 a.m. for those attending the 10 a.m. concert and at

12:15 p.m. for those attending the 11:30 a.m. concert. Tickets are

$13-$16 for adults and $11-$14 for children younger than 11. The Center

SUNDAY

Experience a different culture. Kathak, the classical dance of India,

will be performed by Anjani’s Kathak Dance of India Company at 4 p.m. in

Orange Coast College’s Robert B. Moore Theatre, 2701 Fairview Road, Costa

Mesa. Reserved tickets are $22. Discount tickets, available to OCC

students, senior citizens and children, are $20. Tickets at the door are

MONDAY

Imagine how the concepts of space and memory would look on paper. Then

visit Los Angeles photographer Yoko Kanayama’s color photography exhibit

to see her ideas. The exhibit will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov.

7 at Orange Coast College’s Photo Gallery in the Fine Arts Building, 2701

Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. Titled “GHOST -- 1,” the exhibit features 12

TUESDAY

Get a taste of twisted humor. Joe Orton’s “Entertaining Mr. Sloane”

will run through Oct. 22 at South Coast Repertory’s Second Stage.

Performances are 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, with matinees at 2

p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $18-$47, with discounts

WEDNESDAY

It’s the middle of the week, and you need to unwind. Try a dose of

verbal poetry and some soft guitar tunes at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Alta

Coffee House & Roasting Company, 506 31st St., Newport Beach. Larry

Schulz, author of “Season of the River” will be the featured poet, and
