Boys soccer: Eagles’ Torrones terrorizes Mesa

COSTA MESA - Another game, another three goals for Cesar Torrones.

Estancia’s senior forward scored three tines for the second consecutive

game, all in the first half. That was more than enough for the Eagles to

defeat cross-town rival and host Costa Mesa, 5-0, in the Pacific Coast

League opener for both teams.

Torrones also scored three times against Ocean View. His partner at the

forward spot, Esaul Mendoza scored one goal and assisted on Estancia’s

first goal of the game.

“Cesar and Esaul are on a tear this year,” Estancia Coach Steve Crenshaw

said. “Mesa played great, but we have so many ways to score.”

Estancia (7-1-1, 1-0-0 in league) flaunted its talents, controlling the

ball for the majority of the game with deft passing and touches. The

Eagles outshot the Mustangs (3-8-3, 0-1-0) by a whopping margin of 25-2

in the game, and Estancia goalie Hilario Arriaga only made three saves,

none in the second half.

“They’re too good,” Costa Mesa coach Mike Dunn said. “Our boys played

well, but they were too much.”

Costa Mesa goalie Jose Perez made 17 saves and turned Estancia away

numerous times. The Mustangs had one good scoring chance in the second,

but Ryan Denman’s shot on a free kick curved just wide.

After Torrones’ three goals, he didn’t play in the second half. His

backup, Juan Zarate, scored Estancia’s final goal. That gives Estancia 55

goals scored in nine games, compared to four goals given up.
