Cross country: Pirates take first, second at Irvine Invitational
IRVINE - The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s cross country
teams continued their impressive defense of their 1999 state championship
at the Irvine Invitational, Saturday morning.
The men’s team took first place in the 18-team event with 83 points,
beating out two of the top teams in the state, San Diego Mesa and Mt. San
Antonio, each by one point.
Tony Magana took 10th place to pace the Pirates with a four-mile time
of 21:00. Allen Childress came in 13th with a 21:12 and Victor Lopez
finished 19th at 21:26. Manuel Orozco (21st, 21:31) and Juan Carillo
(25th, 21:37) also scored for OCC.
The three-time defending state champion women’s team took second place
behind only Mt. San Antonio in the 16-team field.
Heather Shurtleff finished second overall in the 5,000-meter course,
posting a time of 19:25. Christiane Reimer was eighth with a 19:56, while
Lindsay Allen took 17th with a 20:35. Other scorers for OCC include Laura
Weaver (19th, 20:44) and Ann Garton (22nd, 21:00).
