The Orange County surf wear industry has grown and expanded to become

a worldwide market. This cottage garment explosion began some three

decades ago right here in our own backyard. From the Beach Boys to Sugar

Ray, the surf sound of Newport echoes in garments that reflect the

California beach lifestyle.

As the snow of winter sets in, transforming life in the Midwest and

the East, summer lingers on as fashion-conscious kids and adults alike

don the ultimate tropical print skirt to take the chill off of winter.

Local garment makers are experimenting with creating tropical print

overcoats. Where will it end?

Here the chill of winter remains simply a brief cloud cover and a few

showers. Surf wear, and especially Hawaiian or tropical print garments,

are acceptable fashion from the beach to the boardroom.

In-style men, and increasingly the ladies too, are seen in

Hawaiian-themed attire at cocktail parties. Even formal occasions will

boast a gent in tux and tiki wear. And what looks more Newport than a guy

in chino slacks, loafers without socks, navy blue blazer and Hawaiian

shirt?

Our style-cam set its sight this week on a few handsome young men who

belong to the fraternity known as the Newport Harbor High School football

team. And since homecoming is just a week away, what better way to focus

the spotlight on local gridiron heros who are also modeling for a good

cause.

The Newport Harbor High School Football Boosters created a special

aloha shirt. The shirt was developed and produced by Heidi and John

Dobrott, who are the parents of John Dobrott Jr., a member of the varsity

squad and one of our models.

Heidi Dobrott is an internationally recognized textile designer who

created the shirt to help raise funds for the athletic program.

Local retailers including Nordstrom at South Coast Plaza, Gary’s

Island at Fashion Island, Kayak’s, Hobie Sports LTD, Surfside Sports,

Weekend Traffic and Aroma’s Coffeehouse are all carrying the shirt,

priced at $45. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the program.

In addition, the aloha shirt can be purchased at all games, including

homecoming. Parents involved who deserve kudos for their dedicated work

to sell the garments include Sheila Collins, Michelle and John Marshall

and Brett Craig.

So here they are, the boys of fall showing off the aloha style.

1. Ryan Devin of Newport Beach is a guard on the Newport Harbor High

School football team. Ryan shows off the aloha style with a blazer and

khaki slacks.

2. Chris Mandarino, Newport Beach tailback and linebacker, wears the

aloha shirt with jeans.

3. John Dobrott Jr., a right tackle from Newport Beach, chooses his

favorite Billabong board shorts, T-shirt and rainbow sandals to wear with

the aloha style.

4. Jim Rothwell, defensive end from Newport Beach, also wears khakis

and sandals with his aloha shirt.

5. Morgan Craig, quarterback for the Sailors, shows off parachute

pants with the aloha shirt.

6. C.J. Collins, nose guard, guard and center for the team, wears

cargo pants with his shirt.

7. Tyler Curtis of Newport Beach wears Polo Ralph Lauren shorts to set

off the aloha spirit.

8. David Marshall, center for the team, also shows polo shorts with

his aloha shirt.
